Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for operation
   • Select, fit and use personal protective equipment according to workplace procedures
   • Participate in shift handover process to identify status and occurrences affecting traffic control
   • Confirm status of traffic activities on the cane railway network and in empty and full yards
   • Establish communication with drivers, crews and other relevant personnel according to workplace procedures
2. Implement schedule
   • Issue train movement instructions to maintain safe operations
   • Use the communication system to provide timely information to relevant personnel
3. Issue train clearances
   • Issue clearance instructions to maintain train separation according to workplace procedures
   • Issue point-to-point clearances according to workplace procedures
4. Maintain train separation
   • Control access to the rail network, including access by drivers, navvies, contractors, harvesting crews and other third parties according to workplace procedures
   • Arrange and coordinate train passing
   • Manage transportation movements using rail network procedures and systems
5. Maintain efficient running
   • Coordinate and adjust transport departures and arrivals according to workplace procedures
   • Monitor train running times and act on opportunities to improve efficiency
   • Maximise train loads within load limits according to workplace procedures
   • Manage train passing to minimise delays and maintain safe operations
   • Monitor and optimise overall operating efficiencies
6. Complete traffic control operations
   • Record train movements and related workplace information according to workplace procedures
   • Ensure recording systems and advice reflect accurate information at the time of handover
   • Carry out handover according to workplace procedures
   • Ensure traffic controllers are aware of system and related equipment status at completion of handover
